College of Science Seminar Series
On October 5, the College of Science will kick off its College Seminar Series emphasizing diversity and excellence in interdisciplinary research and education. The first speaker is a former Mathematics Professor from Texas State, Dr. Paul Kennedy. Dr. Kennedy, a Professor of Mathematics at Texas State for 16 years, has been at Colorado State University since September of 2003. During that time he has established a very successful and nationally recognized program in Mathematics Education. His address to the College, entitled “Access to Mathematics: Interventions that Work,” will include a discussion of the National Science Foundation Center for Learning and Teaching in the West doctoral programs in math/science education. He will also highlight some of the online courses and research that he is working on at Colorado State.
Dr. Kennedy holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from the University of Texas at Austin and is currently a professor in the Department of Mathematics at Colorado State University. He is the director of the NSF Center for Learning and Teaching in the West at CSU, and is leading a meta-analytic research initiative to determine the interventions that have the most effect on decreasing the achievement gap in mathematics and science education. Dr. Kennedy has been an author on Holt Secondary Mathematics since 1989. He is also developing an innovative online pre-calculus e-book at CSU that integrates the TI-84 emulator in the assessment platform. Besides his responsibilities at CSU, he is part of the graduate faculty in the University of Notre Dames graduate teacher education program, Alliance for Catholic Education.
